DOVER-PAPER DOLLS-EARLY VICTORIAN COSTUMES-NEW-TIERNEY!
We have for your bidding and winning pleasure a new Dover Publication. The title is "Early Victorian Costumes and the artist is Tom Tierney. Description:
"Queen Victoria, granddaughter of King George III, was born in 1819. The Victorian era began with her ascent to the English throne in 1837, and lasted until her death, in 1901. Since her reign was remarkably long, involving two major fashion trends-the hoop skirt or crinoline, and the bustle-this book highlight the clothing of the early Victorian years. Fashions of the late Victorian period are in included in a separate volume. (see our other listing)
This captivating volume presents a fashion parade of clothing styles that were popular in the early Victorian years- from approximately 1837-1860. Reflecting the influences of apparel worn by Queen Victoria, women's clothing tended towards a romantic look featuring tightly fitted bodices and full skirts. Long sleeves or gloves hid the arms, and "poke" bonnets obscured the face. Men's wear seemed equally determined to hide the body. Morning coats, knee-length frock coats, and the mid-thigh-length redingote, with its nipped waist, were worn with trousers of a lighter shade.
This new addition to Dover's popular doll series, tracing the history of fashion, include two dolls, male and female, and 16 full-color costumes, among them capes, cloaks and two-piece suits for the gentleman, and modest day dresses, elegant off-the-shoulder evening wear, and a lovely, long-sleeved wedding gown for the lady.
A delightful glimpse of what fashionable ladies and gentlemen were were wearing during the mid-1800's this book-will be prized by fashion enthusiasts, period costume designers and students, lover of the Victorian era and of course paper doll collectors and fans of all ages.
There are specific details regarding the garments included:
Lady Amelia's white silk wedding gown features a dropped shoulder emphasized by a scallop of embroidered sheer rising from the point of the bodice. The "Victoria Sleeves," with puffs on the upper arms, are decorated with white silk embroidery matching the embroidery at the skirts hem. The sheer, scalloped skirt flounce matches the shoulder flounce. Lady Amelia carries a bible, an embroidered handkerchief and a wedding bouquet. Her hair is elaborately braided and curled. A band of silk roses supports her veil."

"At Dover we believe that caring for the environment has become an essential part of good corporate citizenship. To that end we've launched a program through which we expect to continuously reduce the impact that our business has on the planet we share. Our first step involves the adoption of "Dover's Policy for Green Book Manufacturing."
Simply put, we intend to ensure that all of the paper in our books comes from responsibly managed forests and to dramatically increase our use of recycled paper. We also...produce books in North America, thereby eliminating the need for international shipping - a major cause of global air pollution." Chris Kuppig, President, Dover Publications"
