Wonderful Effanbee Doll Here is some more information about JAN HAGARA Jan Hagara is the artist behind every product produced by Jan Hagara Collectables. Everything, from figurines to dolls to parlor fans to notecards to her limited edition lithographs, every product is derived from the subjects of Jan's original watercolor paintings or sculpted by Jan from a living model. Jan Hagara was born in Sand Springs, Oklahoma, the second of three girls growing up in a small-town atmosphere. Her father, Rippol Brown, was an oil refinery worker. For as long as she can remember, Jan Hagara has been drawing faces. "It seems like I've always had a pencil in my hand," says the popular artist. "I remember when I was in the fourth grade, I would draw faces on scraps of paper. I have always been fascinated with faces." She still is. Today, Jan Hagara's unique ability to capture the innocence of childhood has earned her world-wide reputation as an artist and as a creator of collectible prints and porcelain dolls, collector plates, and figurines. Her works, all based on her original watercolor paintings, are instantly recognizable: young children in Victorian-era costumes clutching dolls, toys, or flowers while looking out through wide, wistful eyes. Jan's inspirations were Kate Greenaway, a much-loved illustrator at the turn-of-the-century, and Mary Cassatt, a nineteenth-century American artist known for her pastel paintings of mother and child. At first, Jan was a self-described "Sunday painter," originally in California, then in Arizona. She poured over art books, studying how the old masters used perspective and proportion, color and composition. Early, she discovered that watercolors were more appropriate for her style than were oils. "I feel that the soft delicacy of a child's skin is better captured with water than with oil." Jan began watercolor painting in Fremont, California, in the 1960s. Her style was influenced by the Western School of Watercolors. Her skill was recognized early, when De Young Museum in San Francisco exhibited her prize-winning "Still Life in White" depicting a cauliflower, eggs, onions, and a white vase with spaghetti standing in it. The only thing that wasn't white was the green on the cauliflower leaf. But her favorite subject remained young children. "I've always thought that the years from three to five are the ideal age for children," Jan reflects. "When they are younger, they don't have as much character, and when they are older they lose a little of their natural innocence. It's the age someone would want to freeze in time." Art changed from a hobby to a career for Jan in 1975, seven years after she moved to Tempe, Arizona. She was selling paintings at an art show when her husband, Bill, came up to her and said, "Let's do this full time." Jan painted during the week, and on weekends they piled into their Toyota station wagon and headed for art shows in Arizona and Southern California. They were so successful that the next summer they bought a Chevy van and spent the summer on the road in the Midwest. They hauled a travel trailer and stayed at parks where Jan painted and Bill framed the paintings and prints and kept the books. By 1978 Jan Hagara children were appearing on cards, prints, and collector plates and they issued her first catalog. It didn't take long before spotters from the gift industry found Jan and her distinctive child subjects. In 1983 a company called Royal Orleans asked her to design porcelain figurines. Her very first design, which was named "Jenny" (Jan assigns names to all of the children she paints), was named by gift shops as the most successful figurine of the year in its price bracket. Today, Bill and Jan own Royal Orleans, now called Jan Hagara Collectables. What makes Jan's work so respected and so popular? As with all top artists, her work is unique. To begin with, Jan uses watercolors, an exacting medium for a painter because the artist can't paint over mistakes. "I start by making thumbnail sketches to create the total feeling of the picture. Ideas for names and colors are noted by the sketches for reference." To get the effect she wants, she uses a very simple palette. "I don't use straight primary colors because to me they're very harsh," says Jan. "I want a colorful, but muted look. I paint in just enough contrast that the paintings don't look flat. You do that by shading, but it can't be too dark. If there's too much shadow, the children won't look soft enough." She finishes off every painting with two blue "hash marks," usually in the child's hair, which have become her special artistic signature. Jan strives for a particular look that she describes as peaceful and innocent. She enlarges the pupil of the eye, as if to suggest candlelight. The mouth is full, but serious. "I prefer to paint my children without their teeth showing," she explains. "They have such beautiful faces when they look serious." In choosing her models, she looks for petite noses, a definite chin line, and something that she can see, but not explain. "It's not just beauty that I'm painting but something special that brings out character," she observes. In choosing her subjects for a painting, Jan works exclusively from an extensive library of photographs of children whom she has personally selected. She dresses and poses the children, and Bill takes the photographs. At one time she looked for potential subjects in shopping malls during art shows and even in day care centers and grocery stores, but today her collection is so extensive that she rarely adds to it. In addition to her technique, the other secret to Jan's success is that she paints not just with her brush, but with her whole personality. She describes her painting style as "Romantic Victoriana," and she could well describe her life the same way. The daughter of parents who were confirmed "junkers" as a child she recalls accompanying them to garage sales and Goodwill stores she has always loved old things. One of her favorite pieces of jewelry is an amethyst necklace of tarnished silver that her father bought her years ago and which, she says, she would only polish under duress. She even lives in, as she puts it, "a new house that looks old" a two story stone home in Georgetown, Texas, that Jan and Bill designed themselves. She loves flowers, and when she travels the country, she digs up plants and brings them back to plant at their home. All of Jan's interests appear in her art. Years ago, while she was posing a little girl for a photograph, she had the inspiration to give her an old doll. The girl cradled it lovingly and protectingly. Ever since, one of Jan's trademarks has been the inclusion of old toys. Her love of nature shows up in flowers that her children so often wear or carry. Even when Jan was painting for a hobby, using her own two daughters as models, she painted them in bows and lace and hats with a turn-of -the-century Victorian look. Yet Jan is a thoroughly modern person. She is as involved in her business as she is in her art, and her subjects look like modern children reaching out to touch the distant past. "I'm glad to be living today," she says. "I am the first to admit that I like the creature comforts of today, but I also believe that the Victorian period had something to say to us. In this busy world we need to remember the value of romanticism and the quality of fine handmade things. I want my art to provide these things." About Jan Hagara Collectables Inc. Jan was raised in Sand Springs, Oklahoma, and moved to California in the early sixties, then later to Tempe, Arizona, where she met Bill Hagara in 1972. They were married in 1974, started their business in 1975 selling original paintings, prints, and cards. After showing in a large collectibles show in 1978, their life changed. Many producers saw Jan's unique style for the first time and the contracts began with companies to produce collector plates, figurines, miniatures, dolls, tins, stitchery, and much more. During the next few years, they were busy visiting many of the thousands of stores around the country and Canada that carried her work. In addition, touring the many plants that manufactured her figurines in the Far East. They stopped flying in 1991 and began their present mode of travel in a customized Prevost coach. In 1987, the Hagaras bought out both of the companies that produced her figurines, including Royal Orleans, and moved them to the present location in Georgetown, Texas. Although Bill and Jan have kept a very low profile over the years, they have been an asset to the community, employing as many as thirty people at any one time. In the summer of 1995, Bill and Jan decided to open the front part of the corporate building to the public, both the local area, and to the traffic from I-35. At the outlet, you can view all of Jan's beautiful collectibles. There will be many rare secondary market pieces available, as well as current pieces. Jan does all of the designs for her figurines, and her watercolor paintings are the basis for all her work. Jan sculpts all her dolls, and carefully dresses them to match a loved design. The fabric and laces are of the finest quality, and sometimes even custom made to match an antique sample. You will see a display of the Jan Hagara Collectors' Club pieces. Thousands of members throughout the country within eighteen regional chapters represent one of the nation's most active collector's clubs. You may join our club, and in return, receive a beautiful figurine plus much more. Over the years, Jan has been featured in dozens of magazine and newspaper articles outlining the multitude of various figurines, dolls, and other media portrayed in her art. Her following has been extremely loyal. Once someone realizes the depth and emotion of Jan's pieces, it's hard to resist any future items. At "Signing Parties," customers have been known to wait for hours in line just to have a piece signed by Jan. Customers appreciate Jan's never-ending devotion to maintaining her quality in her reproductions and for fighting to keep prices below industry marks. We will be offering many other older JAN HAGARA ITEMS IN THE COMING WEEKS Please Note: To help everyone understand our type of business we need to inform bidders that we sell used items, our items come from people and individual collectors and not companies. The items are not new in the box and nothing we have ever sold has been perfect or mint. We try and list any major defect - but every item has been used and will show degree of wear. And, sometimes it is hard to describe the degree of wear or use and everyone's perception and standards are different. So, if you are concerned about specific details of any item, please email us and we will try and answer you questions. We say this because some people believe that when they buy items on ebay they expect them to look new - even if they are 50 years old. So please understand that our items are old and used and none are perfect. My Policies: Please understand that INSURANCE is the OPTION and the RESPONSIBILITY of the BUYER and we never add insurance to an item unless instructed to do so by the BUYER. Therefore we are not responsible for lost or damaged items by the Post Office or other delievery company. We do everything to pack each item carefully, but we cannot control how the item is handled once we ship it. Therefore consider insurance carefully on fragile and rare items. Insurance is always listed at $1.65 and that covers insurance for the first $50.00. Insurance is then charged at the same rate as the post office, $1.65 for each additional $100.00 of insurance desired. Thank you. All Sales shipped in the State of Colorado will require a 6.85% Sales Tax. This is required by the Colorado Department of Revenue. Thank you for your understanding. Because of recent changes in Ebay and Paypal, virtually all items must be shipped with delivery confirmation to protect the Buyer and Seller. This has increased the cost of First class Mailing. Please understand this is the result of Ebay trying to elimate the problems of fraud in the Ebay marketplace and we are in agreement that Ebay must be a safe place for people to shop. On items that have a value of over $200 - Signature Confirmation is now required. This also is the policy of Ebay and Paypal. This has affected the cost of shipping items of value. We do not charge a handling fee on items we ship and we try and estimate as close as possible the actual cost of shipping. We normally ship items via priority mail with delivery confirmation because we have found that this is often the most feasible way to ship boxed items. However, we are shipping more and more items via DHL or Fed Ex because tracking and insurance is included in their shipping charges up to $100.00. If we list the option of shipping as "OTHER" - this means we are shipping the item via DHL or FED EX GROUND and we need a physical address to ship to and thus no P.O. Boxes are allowed on DHL or FED EX Shipments. On books we ship via book rate and on items that can fit into an envelope or manilla folder we will ship first class or media mail with delivery confirmation. We always are happy to combine shipping to save you money. If we combine items to save on shipping costs, we just ask that you settle up within two weeks of the first item sold. We do not wish to hold items for more than two weeks - waiting to ship it with some other auction. If you would like an item shipped in a certain way - we will be happy to do whatever you wish. But if you request custom shipping or the use of extra supplies, we will charge for the cost of extra supplies. ALL SHIPPING QUOTES ARE FOR U.S. DELIVERY ONLY!!!! Concerning International Shipments - ALL INTERNATIONAL BIDDERS WILL PAY THE ACTUAL INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING CHARGES. International Bidders, please be aware that shipping around the world cost more than it does to ship within a country. Do not bid if you are unwilling to pay the International Shipping Rates which are often high. Because of the recent postal changes, Insurance is no longer available on International First Class Mail. Insurance is only available through the Post Office if an item is shipped via International Priority Mail. And, because of recent policy changes in Ebay and Paypal, they encourage that all shipments be sent with tracking. So, we also request that all International Shipping be sent via Priority Mail with delivery confirmation. This is expensive and so only bid if you are aware of the high cost of shipping. We will quote First Class Mailing Cost, but we do not recommend this method of shipping. Any item over $100 in value we will REQUIRE INSURANCE if we ship internationally. Please Note: WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR LOST OR DAMAGED ITEMS. WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR SHIPMENTS THAT ARE SLOW DUE TO THE POST OFFICE. Therefore, International Bidders should carefully consider Insurance. Another auction from Cripple Creek Auctions, Inc. Thank you .........
