A rare 15 inch jointed mohair teddy bear with an opening mouth, which is operated by a lever at the back of the head.
The opening mouth works perfectly and is lined with red felt. I believe the bear should squeak or growl as the mouth opens, but this is not working, possibly because of an air leak to the mechanism inside the head.
The amber and black glass eyes are in excellent condition, as is the vertically stitched black nose.
There is some loss to the mohair but no large bare patches. The brown rexine pads are worn, in particular the right paw, where there is also a tiny split to the side of the pad.
The head is filled with wood-wool, the rest of the body with subs. There is light age related soiling, but no stains or odours.
The joints are moving freely and the only repair in a darn to the area between the nose and the right eye.
There is no label to indicate a maker and I would be interested to hear if anyone has any ideas.
From a smoke-free home.

I now know that this bear is " Ross ", a 1950s British bear. He is stuffed with wood-wool around the mouth mechanism, with the remainder being cotton waste wadding and shredded stockinette.
Two pieces of hinged hardboard in his mouth extend into the back of his head, where the ends are held apart by a large spring, covered with gauze. Two metal rods, connected to the hardboard, poke out from the back of the bear's head where they are each tipped with a round ball of amber glass.
The bear is featured on Page 79 of " The Ultimate Teddy Bear Book " by Pauline Cockrill.
